So Lost in Words - Latest Blog Comments en-us Am I Odd? - Sylvia Williams
No Sue your not. You are able to write your own horror as you have written it from the "safety" of your own mind. I believe we each have our own invisible safety net within our minds which we can stretch as far as we each allow it, unless of course your a narcissistic psychopath and then the net breaks! The difference between watching horror and writing it is that when you watch a horror movie you are no longer in control, you cannot write what happens next, it is fear of the unknown! Whilst you feel this way watching it so people feel the same way when they read what you have written, as it is their unknown to your known if you understand what I'm trying to say. Fear is a big word that wreaks havoc with our minds, you are in control of your fear as you write it, whilst all the while testing and stretching it, but never actually breaking it - in other words your safety valve comes into play without you even noticing. You don't have this when watching a horror movie. I could go on and on but its getting very late x nite nite

My Response:

Another great idea! Thank you Sylvia. I agree with what you say about control, I think it a very valid point. As you say, when it is playing out in your own mind you choose where and how it ends. Not so in a film!

And of course you are right when you say that in someone such as a narcissistic psychopath there is no 'safety switch,' or there is, it is over-ridden, which is why they are capable of committing such awful crimes in reality, sadly.

Thank you for such an in depth and thoughtful answer.

S P Oldham
Mon, 24 Jul 2017 18:49:09 -0500 /blog/entry/4186771/am-i-odd#comment4366470 Am I Odd? - Wendy Mitchell
No, I do not think you are odd. Maybe the fact that you can write your own horror stories and have fun whilst doing so is because you know it is fictional.
I have read horror stories, in fact, I used to love them.
Like you Stephen King sent shivers up my spine. I read many of his books. I can still remember now, quite vividly some of the scenes from some of his books. I think now that I am older I seemed to have required more of a nervous disposition.
I will not watch a horror film. If I did attempt to I would be the one with a big cushion stuffed in front of my face. Actually, I do not even think that is the worse part. The going to bed afterwards (especially if you are all alone, home alone) lying in the dark, now that is when my imagination would run riot after a horror film.
I think when you are reading a horror book your imagination may even go further than the authors but then you know that author has done a good job of writing a very clever story.
Now ghosts and spiritual stories will take me to a new level of nervousness.
I will most probably be on pins later just writing this.
No, my horror book days are done with.give me one of your novels of a gentler kind. Actually, there is plenty of real horror in the historic novels which also stays with you. True happenings that are unbelievable but you accept.
I would always prefer to read a book than sit in front of a screen.
Ending on one more point, if some of my dreams or nightmares rather were made into films I think I would be a very wealthy woman.
Thank you, SP Oldham

My Response:

In my dreams are my books made into films! If you know what I mean... If they were, I wouldn't watch them! lol. You make some great points here. I have often thought that about historical fiction, there is enough horror in those stories, but of course the emphasis in that genre is different and so the horror is not laboured or drawn out, at least not usually.

I also agree that a GOOD ghost story can be far more chilling without ever becoming graphic. The implied, when done well, can be extremely disturbing.

Thank you for your reply.

S P Oldham.
Mon, 24 Jul 2017 15:46:37 -0500 /blog/entry/4186771/am-i-odd#comment4366464 Zombie Competition Entries Here Please! - Nancy Townsend
A club
Sun, 23 Jul 2017 10:22:03 -0500 /blog/entry/4179320/zombie-competition-entries-here-please#comment4366131 Zombie Competition Entries Here Please! - Kayleigh Richardson
A club.
Wed, 19 Jul 2017 17:36:50 -0500 /blog/entry/4179320/zombie-competition-entries-here-please#comment4365099 Zombie Competition Entries Here Please! - Adrian Crook
A club
Mon, 17 Jul 2017 15:22:07 -0500 /blog/entry/4179320/zombie-competition-entries-here-please#comment4364470 Zombie Competition Entries Here Please! - charlie pope
a club
Sun, 16 Jul 2017 16:19:55 -0500 /blog/entry/4179320/zombie-competition-entries-here-please#comment4364185 Zombie Competition Entries Here Please! - Anna T Wilds
Club
Sun, 16 Jul 2017 11:10:45 -0500 /blog/entry/4179320/zombie-competition-entries-here-please#comment4364125 Zombie Competition Entries Here Please! - Jeanette Leighton
A club
Sat, 15 Jul 2017 04:24:30 -0500 /blog/entry/4179320/zombie-competition-entries-here-please#comment4363890 Zombie Competition Entries Here Please! - juliett mills
club
Fri, 14 Jul 2017 04:09:56 -0500 /blog/entry/4179320/zombie-competition-entries-here-please#comment4363594 Zombie Competition Entries Here Please! - Sharon Williams
Club
Thu, 13 Jul 2017 12:03:49 -0500 /blog/entry/4179320/zombie-competition-entries-here-please#comment4363446 Zombie Competition! - Anthea Holloway
a club
Tue, 11 Jul 2017 04:15:38 -0500 /blog/entry/4179289/zombie-competition#comment4362664 Zombie Competition Entries Here Please! - Liz llewellyn
Club
Tue, 11 Jul 2017 01:25:03 -0500 /blog/entry/4179320/zombie-competition-entries-here-please#comment4362592 Zombie Competition Entries Here Please! - Carl Grattage
Club
Mon, 10 Jul 2017 19:09:15 -0500 /blog/entry/4179320/zombie-competition-entries-here-please#comment4362521 Zombie Competition Entries Here Please! - Michael harris
Club
Mon, 10 Jul 2017 13:57:27 -0500 /blog/entry/4179320/zombie-competition-entries-here-please#comment4362489 Zombie Competition Entries Here Please! - Jade G
Club
Mon, 10 Jul 2017 04:11:40 -0500 /blog/entry/4179320/zombie-competition-entries-here-please#comment4362365 Zombie Competition! - Joanne Hayes
A Club
Mon, 10 Jul 2017 01:41:59 -0500 /blog/entry/4179289/zombie-competition#comment4362306 Zombie Competition Entries Here Please! - Kristyn Harris
A club
Sun, 09 Jul 2017 17:08:10 -0500 /blog/entry/4179320/zombie-competition-entries-here-please#comment4362218 Zombie Competition Entries Here Please! - Laura Hampton
CLUB!
Sun, 09 Jul 2017 13:32:55 -0500 /blog/entry/4179320/zombie-competition-entries-here-please#comment4362205 Zombie Competition Entries Here Please! - Kathy Cakebread
it was a club
Sun, 09 Jul 2017 09:55:35 -0500 /blog/entry/4179320/zombie-competition-entries-here-please#comment4362172 Zombie Competition Entries Here Please! - Andrew Rodwell
Club
Sun, 09 Jul 2017 09:02:41 -0500 /blog/entry/4179320/zombie-competition-entries-here-please#comment4362161
